In the southern part of Åland’s stunning archipelago, the island of Björkör is a unique nature reserve that offers visitors an unforgettable glimpse into the region’s past and its breathtaking natural beauty.

18th-century archipelago homestead

Björkör is home to an 18th-century archipelago homestead that has been maintained in its original condition. Owned by the Åland Regional Government, the homestead allows visitors to step back in time and experience what life was like for the island’s inhabitants.

The house is full of original items, and it is fabulous to see! Pictures tell more than thousand words, so check the gallery below.

Pilot cabin and a memorial

The island’s history is further enriched by the remnants of a pilot cabin, which was manned for 150 years until 1937 by pilots from the Degerby station.

A memorial stone on top of the foundation of the pilot cabin tells a tragic tale — 13-year-old Karl Johan, one of the homestead’s nine children, drowned in 1879 while reportedly attempting to save a baby seal.

Björkör’s scenic nature

Björkör is not only a historical site but also a protected nature reserve. A well-marked hiking trail guides visitors through a landscape of marshes, meadows, and rocky shores covered in lichen.

For panoramic views stretching for miles, climb the observation tower, a highlight of the island that offers a breathtaking perspective of the surrounding archipelago.

Uniquely, even cloudberries grow on the island—a rare sight outside of Lapland.

A haven for birdwatchers and wildlife enthusiasts

The Björkör nature reserve includes two forested islands with freshwater pools, over 150 treeless skerries and rocky islets, and surrounding marine areas.

This habitat is an essential feeding ground for migrating waterfowl. During migration periods, up to 10,000 Eiders and Long-tailed Ducks can be spotted in the area.

The waters around Björkör are also home to threatened species such as the Ringed and Grey Seal, making the island an invaluable sanctuary for wildlife.

How to visit Björkör

Björkör is accessible to visitors, with a solid pier located on the island’s south side. If you do not have your own boat, local entrepreneurs offer boat taxi services to and from the island.

More details on these services can be found on Föglö’s tourism website. You can also find accommodation in Föglö, i.e. in the historical Guesthouse Enigheten, which was founded 1625. It is located in Degerby village.

However, keep in mind that Björkör is a Natura 2000 nature reserve, the biggest nature reserve area in Åland. Visitors are required to respect its protected status.

Camping is not allowed, and open fires are strictly prohibited. It is essential to avoid damaging any plants or disturbing the natural environment in any way.

Please ensure that you follow these guidelines to help preserve the island’s unique ecosystem for future generations.
