Föglö nature trails

Föglö is a municipality in the Åland archipelago, located southeast of the Åland mainland. Föglö consists of several islands, with Degerby serving as the main village and ferry hub. Föglö has two nature trails for visitors to explore.

Historically, Föglö has been a vital link in maritime trade routes, and its cultural heritage reflects a deep connection to fishing, farming, and seafaring traditions.

Today, it attracts visitors with its scenic nature, charming degerby village, and opportunities for kayaking, birdwatching, and island hopping.

If you’re planning a trip to Föglö, make sure to include these nature trails on your itinerary.

Jyddö Trail

Jyddö nature trail is located on Jyddö island. The trail takes hikers through a mix of open areas, hazel groves, mowed meadows, and lush deciduous forests.

The rolling terrain ensures a dynamic hike, with higher rocky hills offering panoramic views of both the serene archipelago and the forests and fields of the island.

Along the way, you’ll pass a striking rock slope, scenic seashores, and traditional pastures along the shores.

Rich Birdlife And Flora

Nature lovers will appreciate the abundant wildlife along the route. Seabirds such as the grass duck and northern shoveler are commonly spotted, while the majestic white-tailed eagle often soars high above the island.

The area is also home to various butterflies and a rich variety of plant species, making every step along the trail a chance to discover something new.

Along the trail, you can find an oak which is approximately 300 years old. Oaks used to belong to the crown and farmers and workers were not allowed to cut them down.

Oakwood was needed for shipbuilding. Jyddö is one of the the most oak-rich areas in Åland.

The 300 years old oak is on the left side picture below (or the first picture, if you read from mobile).

Resting Spots And Lookout Points

For those wanting to take a break and soak in the surroundings, the trail offers three well-placed picnic spots with tables. One highlight of the hike is the 10-meter-high lookout tower, which offers spectacular views over the surrounding landscape.

Close to the start or end (depending on which way you decide to walk) of the route, a lean-to shelter with a barbecue grill provides a perfect place for a relaxing meal.

Practical Information For Jyddö Trail

The nature trail begins on Jyddö island, just 900 meters from the Överö ferry port and 14 kilometres from Degerby village.

There is a small parking area where you can leave your car or bike.

The 5-kilometre route takes about two hours to complete at a leisurely pace, allowing plenty of time to enjoy the scenery and take breaks at the designated rest areas.

Hastersboda Trail

Another remarkable trail in Föglö is the Hastersboda nature trail, a 4-kilometre route that takes visitors through a stunning mix of coastal and forested landscapes.

The trail offers an enriching glimpse into Åland’s history and natural beauty. Its starting point is located next to Isaksson’s holiday cabins, 15 kilometres from Degerby.

A Window Into Archipelago Life

The archipelago people of Åland have long lived in harmony with nature, deriving their livelihoods from the sea.

As you walk along the trail, information boards provide insights into the traditions of fishing, farming, forestry, and self-sufficiency that shaped the lives of past generations.

This historical context enriches the hiking experience, making it both educational and immersive.

A Diverse And Enchanting Landscape

The first part of the trail follows the seaside, winding over cliffs and rocky shorelines, offering breathtaking views of the surrounding waters.

From there, the path leads through an untouched forest with a magical atmosphere, where towering trees create a serene and peaceful environment.

The return route brings hikers past open meadows where sheep and cows often graze.

How To Get To Föglö

Ferry routes:
Åland traffic’s Southern route: Ferry port Överö, from Kökar (green line on the map below)
Åland traffic’s Svinö line, from Svinö (main Åland), several departures a day (blue line on the map below)
Timetables

From the Överö ferry port, you can only travel toward Kökar or Snäckö (and arrive from those directions); when traveling to or from the Åland mainland, you must use the Svinö line. This ensures sufficient capacity on the southern and cross lines.

Föglö makes a great stop between the Åland mainland and Kökar — for example, when coming from Kökar, you can disembark at Överö, drive through Föglö, and continue from Degerby to the mainland. Or do the same route in reverse.
