10 things to do in Kökar
In this post you get tips of 10 things to do in Kökar
1 Hiking

Kökar offers one of the most fascinating trails in the whole Åland. There are actually several nature trails in Kökar. The longest, Kalen trail, is 7-8 km long, Hamnö trails are 1-2 km long. There is also one trail close to Klobbars guest house.
2 Kayaking
Why not go out on the sea? Rent a kayak from Sandvik Marina and Camping and paddle around Hamnö Island. You get a magnificent view of the church, you can explore little bays and spot a lot of birds.
The sea is very clear in Kökar offering a lovely underwater view as you paddle along the shores. Note: do not do this in windy weather, unless you have experience of kayaking.
3 Cycling
Rent a bike for a day or two and cycle around the island. Almost all the accommodation places rent out bikes for a reasonable price.
The road is only 15 kilometers long, so everything is near. You can visit the church, Karlby village, museum, arts and craft shop, which is opposite the museum, an apple farm, and a flea market, which you can find on an old fishing hut in Hällsö marina.
4 Birdwatching
Kökar lies in the middle of the route of the migrating birds. Every spring thousands of birds rest in Kökar before they continue their travel further north. Several bird-watching platforms in Kökar offer not only a good place to spot the birds but also more information on them.
You can spot birds also in the summer and then again in autumn migration season. See the locations of the platforms from this map.
5 Kökar Disc Golf Park
Are you a disc golf player? There’s a 12-hole course in Kökar, starting in Peders Applagård’s café. Enjoy the sports in Kökar’s picturesque settings.

6 Trip To Källskär
This is almost a must thing to do if you visit Kökar. In the summer season, there are day trips to Kllskär, which leave from Hotel Brudhäll, bookings, and more info.

7 Camping
If you are looking for an easygoing place to start camping, Kökar is a good choice. Sandvik Marina and Camping has a good camping ground with all the services. There are plenty of beautiful spots to set up your tent, and you still have a toilet and kitchen with all the pans and utensils for your use.
The camping site is peaceful, even in the peak season there are never any parties going on.
8 Fishing
I’m no expert in fishing, but apparently fishing is good in Kökar. You can fish from bridges or ask a local to take you on a boat trip.
When you are fishing, remember your fishing licences! For fishing, you need a fishing permit. Read about fishing and fishing permits in Åland (link goes to Visit Åland’s website).
9 Relax & enjoy the views
Pack enough water and your preferred snacks, maybe some coffee and a book, and something to sit on. Wear proper outdoor gear according to the weather. I prefer 2 – 3 layers as weather can change rapidly in the outer archipelago.
Head to the cliffs in Hamnö or Kalen area in Kökar. Search and pick your favourite spot on the cliffs. Enjoy the sea views, stare to the horizon and do nothing! After a while you can enjoy your coffee and snacks and read your book.
At its best your mind is refreshingly calm & empty after this “activity”. Most likely you can do this “activity” many hours without any human interruption.
NOTE! March – August: Remember to use sunscreen. Spots with proper shade are hard to find on the shores of archipelago cliffs plus the sea reflects the sun light strongly. It is easy to get a sunburntface on a sunny spring day, even if it feels cool.
10 See the sunset
The sunsets in Kökar are amazing! This activity requires an evening with quite clear sky. You can enjpy the sunset anywhere where you can see the western-northwestern sky, but a popular and easy-ti-reach spot is on the cliffs behind the Kökar church in Hamnö.
Warning
Consumption of these activities, especially no 9 & 10, may cause you incurable Kökar fever 😊.
